So often I am asked why I didn't stay in New York to pursue my career in the fashion industry. I understand that it's home to Vogue and all things couture - but I had grown up around the city and I knew that LA offered me something New York couldn't. (and I'm not talking about fresh avocados) Los Angeles offered me contemporary, missy, juniors, fast-fashion, up-and-comers, and trend.
The old "trend vs. style" battle is actually "LA vs. NY". The east coast offered me the classic LBD from Chanel, but the west coast offered me Wild Fox and For Love and Lemons.
I wanted to begin my career in a place where trends are started, then I could dive into the world of designer - where their trends are based off timeless silhouettes and prints.
Although LA is the best place for my career at this time, I will say that New Yorkers have a work ethic unlike any other. They are direct and to the point, and when asked to complete a task...there is no other option but to complete it. They hustle through the streets yelling at their phones or each other and their pizza might as well be a drug.
LA is more relaxed. People seem to wander and observe as they pass through the streets, and their drugs of choice are kombucha and street tacos!
BUT ... if I had to choose, I would have to go with beaches and palm trees over sky scrapers and hot-dog vendors.
